Hurricane Melissa—the strongest hurricane ever recorded in Jamaica—has left a devastating mark on the island. Entire communities are struggling to recover after catastrophic winds, flooding, and landslides tore through homes, hospitals, and infrastructure. At least 40% of buildings and roads in the western region, including Montego Bay, have been damaged. Small towns like Black River were nearly wiped off the map, and current estimates place total damages at almost eight billion USD—nearly half of Jamaica’s annual GDP.
But even in the face of heartbreaking loss, the Jamaican spirit remains unbroken. As Prime Minister Andrew Holness shared, while some areas have been “completely destroyed,” the people of Jamaica continue to stand strong for one another.
